CLAVERACK--Two Columbia County men were hurt in a two-car head-on collision on Route 66 south of the County Route 18 intersection, July 21 at 9:52 a.m.
Mark Iacoviello, 57, of New Lebanon was driving a 2005 Chrysler 300 sedan northbound on Route 66 when he pulled into the southbound lane to pass a tractor-trailer that was slowing down in traffic in front of him, witnesses told deputies.
The Iacoviello vehicle crashed into a southbound 1991 Chevrolet pickup truck operated by Frank Concile, 81, of Hudson, according to a press release from Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr.
Both drivers, who were alone in their vehicles, were extricated by West Ghent firefighters.
The Greenport Rescue Squad treated the drivers at the scene and took them to a landing zone to be airlifted by helicopter to the Albany Medical Center.
Mr. Iacoviello complained of chest and arm pain and facial cuts. Mr. Concile had a chest injury, arm pain and a possibly broken leg.
Mr. Iacoviello was wearing a seatbelt and Mr. Concile was not because he had medical exemption from doing so, said the press release.
Greenport Fire and Police departments and State Police assisted at the scene.
The Sheriff's Office is continuing the investigation and charges are pending.
On the scene for the Sheriff's Office were Deputy David Rose, Undersheriff James Sweet, Captain David Bartlett, Sr. Investigator William Foster, Investigator Patrick Logue and Deputy Eli Fieser.
