HUDSON--Columbia County 911 dispatchers recently completed Advanced Law Enforcement Dispatcher training at the Berkshire County Communications Center in Pittsfield, Mass.
Dispatchers Lori Bartlett and Dana Petty attended the 2-day, 16-hour course, which taught skills for handling emergency law enforcement calls by following a formula designed to gather and share the most important information quickly and accurately.

Companies respond to fire in basement |

Niverville firefighters and the Valatie Rescue Squad were called to a structure fire at the Eugene Petrillo residence at 5 Petrillo Lane, Kinderhook, July 14 at 12:50 a.m. Smoke coming from a fire in the basement was showing when the Niverville fire chief arrived.
Companies providing mutual aid to the scene or put on standby were Valatie, Kinderhook, Tri-Village, Stuyvesant, Chatham, Red Rock, Austerlitz, Canaan, East Chatham, Lebanon Valley, North Chatham, South Schodack, Castleton and Nassau. Interior firefighters from Battalion Five were requested to respond.
According to information from 911, the fire was knocked down an hour later. National Grid and the Kinderhook Town building inspector were called to the scene. Valatie Rescue asked for assistance from Greenport Rescue at the scene. No injuries were reported. The Columbia County Cause and Origin Team is investigating. Units were clear at 8:57 a.m. |

HILLSDALE--Police say the Internet helped two teenage girls from Philmont in their alleged burglary of a Hillsdale home July 10.
Livingston State Police were called to the scene of a burglary by the daughter of a Hillsdale resident who was away on vacation. The burglary occurred during the day Saturday, July 10, while the daughter was at work. When she returned to the house, she discovered a large flat screen TV, computer, video game system and a large quantity of bottled liquors had been stolen.

Family loses all in house fire |

STUYVESANT--The Kelley and John Demarest family lost everything in a July 8 house fire at 956 Route 9J. Donations to help the family may be made at any branch of the First Niagara Bank.
Stuyvesant firefighters and Valatie Rescue were dispatched at 2:52 a.m. The family was alerted to the blaze by a smoke detector.

Ghent man accused of sexually abusing two-year-old boy |

GHENT--Brandon K. Varian, 18, of Ghent was charged with one count of first degree criminal sexual act, a class B felony, July 1 at 8:13 p.m. according to Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison, Jr.
Sheriff's Office Investigator Mark Dunspaugh made the arrest.
Mr. Varian is accused of sexually abusing a two-year-old boy while taking a shower with him June 28 at the child's residence in Ghent.
