GALLATIN -- “Bridges are in a constant state of decay, not just here but nationwide,” said Dean Knox, Director of the Engineering Division of the Columbia County Department of Public Works, on a recent tour of some of the bridges in the southern part of the county.
Mr. Knox, a native of Copake, and current resident of Ghent, knows the county bridge infrastructure better than most. Since he started working for the county in 1980 he has been involved in the reconstruction or replacement of 37 bridges. Most of those projects were subsidized by federal and state funds; only four were paid for by the county taxpayers alone.

HUDSON--In a decision released November 26 Judge Paul Czajka dismissed a petition filed by Hudson Property Owners Coalition, Inc. (HPOC) against the City of Hudson, its assessor, Garth Slocum, and the Hudson School District. The ruling affirms the right of the city and the school district to collect taxes using the 2010 tax rolls and denies a request by the petitioners for an injunction against the city's use of its current tax rolls.
Deborah Kinney, speaking on behalf of HPOC as well as Wendle Davis, Ruth Moser and Sarah Louie, who joined in the legal action against the city, confirmed this week that they plan to appeal the decision.

ANCRAM--“It'll be a hot time, in the old town, tonight,” so the song goes. And it was a hot time at the old November 18 Town Board meeting.
The heat wasn't generated by anyone's cow kicking over a lantern, the board's adoption of the 2011 status quo budget or by any governmental issue at all. It was a direct result of the chili cook-off, hosted by the Ancram Youth Commission in the hallway outside the meeting room.

CHATHAM - The Board of Education discussed tax rates and tax levies at this week's meeting, with schools Superintendent Cheryl Nuciforo addressing assessments and the impact they have on the school budget.
The Tuesday, November 30, meeting also saw the swearing in of new board member James Marks. Mr. Marks was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the board after an application and interview process earlier this month. He will serve on the board until the annual budget vote in May, when voters will have a chance to pick someone to serve a full, three-year term. Mr. Marks may run for that term if he chooses.
